Finger Introduction

When you play guitar, it is necessary to know how to use your fingers correctly. If you are a right-handed guitarist, your left-hand fingers will be busy on the fretboard and your right-hand fingers will be busy picking. It happens when you play a “Casual Acoustic Guitar”. But if you are a “Classical Guitarist”, your right-hand fingers will be busy not to hold a pick but for playing. Your right-hand fingers will be used for plucking the guitar.

However, in this article you will discuss all the fingers’ names and we will number our fingers so that we can easily understand any music writing as well as all

the finger exercises from the next lesson. The introduction of fingers will be discussed for “Casual Acoustic Guitar” playing of Right-Handed Guitarists.

To understand finger exercises, left hand fingers will be numbered from 1 to 4. “Index Finger” is called “1st Finger”, “Middle Finger” is called “2nd Finger”, “Ring Finger” is called “3rd Finger” and “Pinky Finger” is called “4th Finger”. “Thumb” is not used for playing but for holding the guitar and controlling other fingers.

To play “Bass

Guitar” or “Classical Guitar” you need to know the names of your right-hand fingers also as these guitars need to be played by your right-hand fingers. Right hand fingers are named as “PIMA”; where “P” represents the word “Pulgar” (which means “Thumb”), “I” represents the word “Indice” (which means “Index Finger”), “M” represents the word “Medico” (which means “Middle Finger”) and “A” represents the word “Anular” (which means “Ring Finger”).

The lessons and exercises of “Classical guitar” are very different from the “Casual Guitar”. All the exercises discussed from next lesson are for Casual guitar, Classical guitar exercises will be discussed in the “Advance Lesson”.
